OVERVIEW
Middlesex Community College celebrates 50 years starting in September 2020. The college is proud to honor the past and celebrate the future, which centers around the over 26,000 students MCC has welcomed over its storied history. The heart of the college's mission is student success and Middlesex strives to provide a quality and accessible education for all.
A leader of award-winning online learning for over 20 years, MCC is one of the first in the state to offer online courses. As a community college, MCC awards associate degrees as well as credit and noncredit certificates to help students advance to the workforce and transfer to a four-year college or university. The college enjoys partnerships with industry leaders within the communities of Bedford, Lowell and the surrounding area. Students receive a high-quality, affordable and comprehensive education that includes clinical, lab, internship and service-learning opportunities.
In the 2019-2020 academic year, Middlesex was awarded $841,000 for its Biotech Program, ranked No. 2 in Massachusetts on the 2020 list of Best Schools for Registered Nursing Programs by Nursingprocess.org, visited the Statehouse to advocate for the importance of community colleges, ranked no. 41 in the country on the 2019 list of Best Online Associate in Business Degree Programs by Intelligent.com, was named part of Attorney General Maura Healey's $1.7 million grant to fund local consumer advocacy programs for MCC's Law Center, received $250,000 as part of the first Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grant for medical assistants, ranked no. 4 in the state and no. 27 in the country on Washington Monthly's 2019 List of Best two-year colleges for adult learners, performed well against four-year colleges and universities at the Mass. DECA Competition, placed third in a national engineering competition, visited with U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy, received a NASPA Excellence Award and an award from the League for Innovation in the Community College for its new student onboarding process, had faculty and staff recognized at the 2019 Performance Recognition Program award ceremony, and celebrated 10 years of its Honors Program, among other important accomplishments.
Throughout the pandemic, MCC transitioned spring coursework and student services to remote, virtual and limited contact systems to ensure students successfully completed the semester. MCC's health programs donated a surplus of Personal Protective Equipment to Lowell General Hospital, while the Facilities and Security departments teamed up to loan out technology and equipment students needed to finish their classes.
President
Phillip Sisson, Ed.D
Phil Sisson is the 5th President of Middlesex Community College (Mass.). He has over 30 years of diverse and exemplary college leadership experience in the areas of campus administration, strategic planning, academic and student affairs programming, fiscal management, resource development and business, community and K-16 partnerships – all with a clear and consistent focus on equity, access and student success.
Sisson developed a passion for teaching and serving adult learners, as well as for the unique mission of community colleges at Bristol Community College (Mass.) before accepting a leadership position at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), the largest community college in New England. Before arriving at Middlesex, Sisson returned to Massachusetts to serve as first Dean, then Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs at Cape Cod Community College.
Sisson served as Provost and Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs at Middlesex for 11 years. In this role, he acted as a change agent and collaborative leader – working with teams of colleagues across the institution – to establish and maintain a number of noteworthy and innovative academic, student affairs and enrollment initiatives designed to better serve students. His focus on student pathways and outcomes, workforce development and growth, and inclusion and equity positioned Middlesex as the flagship community college in the state.
Sisson is first and foremost an educator. Throughout his career, he has focused on creating opportunities for access, success, completion and equity for all students, spending the last three decades championing the transformative power of a community college education. With strategic vision, entrepreneurial leadership and open communication, he has committed his career to creating a diverse and inclusive community where all students are able to learn, grow and succeed. As President of Middlesex, Sisson's focus is on developing MCC as a pacesetter and leader of equitable education practices nationwide.
